Rutgers Instant Messaging

Rutgers IM is an open-source Instant Messaging (IM) service that provides secure, encrypted communications with other users logged into the Rutgers central IM server, making it more appropriate for sending sensitive information within the University than standard Instant Messenger services. Rutgers IM uses the University NetIDs to identify people which prevents faking identities or hiding in anonymity.  In addition, Rutgers IM includes features such as one-on-one instant messaging and temporary and permanent chat rooms.

Rutgers IM requires an OIT hosted email service (not available to individuals identified with a department/unit/school that has access to restricted PHI data).  If eligible, go to netid.rutgers.edu and click on “Service Activation” to activate this service.
